该剧以一个徽厨跌宕起伏的人生传奇故事展示了近代徽商和徽文化的厚重历史。胡文清原为晚清一官宦世家的公子，因突遭家庭变故，为生活所迫只得来到一家酒楼当了一名小伙计，开始了他的传奇人生。他亲历过辛亥革命、北伐战争、土地革命战争、抗日战争和解放战争等重大社会变革，经历了学艺时的种种磨难和同伴的排挤，创业时的曲折艰辛和内讧，事业发展时的日本人和汉奸的迫害，以及家庭内部的冲突和感情危机等等种种人生曲折和艰难，终以“忍辱负重，百折不挠”的“徽骆驼”精神，造就了徽菜的辉煌，成为徽馆业的领军人物，在新中国成立的庆祝活动中，胡文清作为徽菜系的代表同全国其他几大菜系代表一起受邀进京献艺。
